Lessons; symbolism general

Introduction

A special approach in flower arranging is to start from the symbolic meaning based on centuries of religious history. An arrangement based on a theme will take on an extra dimension. A symbolic arrangement is always based on a theme connected with religion. Texts from the Bible can inspire themes as receiving, choosing, healing, trials, and so on. We can also base the arrangement on themes as peace, justice and care for Creation. Or we can start from personal experience e.g. baptism, marriage and loyalty. An idea can come from a song or a prayer. A symbolic arrangement can be made for the home or for a ceremonial function in church.

Symbols and expression
Symbols are acts or attributes which refer to life, death, sin, love, God, eternity, loyalty. A symbol has a certain meaning and sometimes evokes emotion. Symbolic meanings have been used for centuries in paintings, stained glass, but also in the Bible. We regard the symbol as an intermediary between a wider reality and ourselves. When we make symbolic arrangements they must be recognizable.

Choice of materials and design
We use materials like: flowers, leaves, fruits, mosses, stones, sand, earth, wood. We also use attributes and accessories like: candles, drapery, a cross, star shapes and so on. We start from a theme and choose the materials to express it. Be sure the idea is easy to recognize. Means of expression such as form, line, rhythm, movement and color will give the arrangement a special character. We can also use plants from the Bible, scents and the symbolic meaning of numbers, flowers and trees to express our ideas.

Expressing a theme
We can start the flower arrangement with inspiration from a text, from an emotion or from the power and expression of the materials. When creating a flower arrangement with a special meaning remember the following:

What is the theme you want to express.
Which means of expression are functional; which flowers and other materials, colors and shapes are suitable.
Which design, shape or composition is the best.
Where will you place the arrangement and what is the influence of the surroundings.
