Trends in Holland 2001
This page provides you with brief information about Dutch and some European trend forecasts in
2001
done by magazines and trend watchers. There are this year many
possibilities and directions, too many to write about all of them. There is an overlap between the
different trend watchers, but many different trend names cover about the
same idea's. Because of this it is just as the past few years not easy to make
it practical. Best is to choose what is suitable for your own situation.
Trends according the Dutch Interior institute
For 2001 they give following developments:
Sensual space
Straight forms and shining materials, colored glass, wood veneer and
metallic. Warm tempting colors such as cognac. Classical elements
from the 7ties return, but also glitters and luxury, but no gaudy
exuberance.
Inner space
Comfortable living with natural materials such as felt, fur, skin,
grass and linen. Constructions are emphasized. Monochromatic give us a
restful element. Green is the trendy color and eco plays also an
important role.
Urban space
Modern sculptures and contrasting design with straight forms, metal and
leather. Warm tints such as kaki, bordeaux and blue. The whole stays
minimal.
Cyber space
Essential starting point are the years 60 with a futuristic design, but with
modern
materials. Contrasting colors in a strong contrast. Classical design
returns. It is a mix of the past and the future.
Trends according the Dutch magazine Elle Wonen
Elle Wonen expect seven trends for the year 2001, they are:
Raw and pure
A trend based on the artless unaffected. Nature, handicraft, raw forms as
an tribute to the earthly. Knitting, braiding, weaving, knotting and other
old techniques are the essence. Materials are natural, felt is an eye catching
material.
Fun design
This trend looks like a bit funny. It may be nice, funny, eye caching,
special, free and different. It can serve as an accent in a interior.
Tropical speed
Natural materials such as raw stone and wood are the essentials of this trend. Flagstones,
an open fire cactus and Monstera, but also
Platycerium, Agave, Aloe and banana.
Western Zen
Zen stand for rest and patience All excess is disappeared. Only sub tile beauty stays. Zen is based on natural materials, earth tints, soft white,
gray and natural.
Nomad life
The essence of this trend is nature and natural materials. Textile
and materials which are used for centuries to warm ourselves and to
surround.
Felt, wool, knitting and weavings. The colors are natural.
Everything is soft and beautiful.
Villa Rivièra
Elegance, ironwork, technical forms and terrazzo patio's. Pastel colors
mother of pearl, white and friendly neutral colors, covered with a powdery
perfume.
Wood construction
The years 50 (1950) are the source of inspiration for this trend.
Beautiful, simple en elegant design made of wood, board materials and massive wood play
together the game. The connections are an important element in the design.
Nice forms without sharp corners and narrow elegant paws,
an tribute to the beautiful design of the period around 1950.

Spring time 2001: Growing together
The family feeling is very important and people must feel them self, free
and uncomplicated, though within a social context. The atmosphere becomes spontaneous and a bit weedy,
it will have an own
identity. The element collection and the art object become more important.
Colors: with a natural base we can combine with strong colors in different
tints. Saturated colors can be used besides weak colors. There is a
difference in intensity. Much is possible in the combination.
Material: glad en raw ceramic, canvas or transparent colored glass or aluminum,
porcelain or wood.
Pattern: irregular stripes or dots, letters or figures, but also ethnic European stripe
patterns.
Forms: organic and straight forms alone or in combination. Design in
flower art is irregular and restful, but it is creative. Use many clear
flowers shapes, but limited foliage. Flower art is
nonchalant .Summer 2001: Sensuality
The atmosphere must be female and sensual and sometimes have an unashamed
power. Intensive red tints and textures let us think on skin. Materials
such as leather fit well.
Colors: red tints, from soft pink skin colors till a dark red.
Material: smooth, paintwork, glass, satin, till leather, latex, paraffin and
polyester.
Pattern: geometric, organic or suggestive forms.
Forms: geometric forms, filled organic forms, romantic or straight. The
soft will alternate with the straight and smooth. There are transparent lookthroughs
and structures, twined, tortuous, and filled forms. Lines
are powerful, tempting and sensual. The scent of perfume can add an extra
value.
Autumn 2001: Landscape
The flower field, grasses and the roadside are in the interest. The
landscape is the source for the trendy atmosphere. Combinations of straight
and natural, from weather-beaten and elegant or rough and luxury ask for
our attention, But above all luxury.
Colors: brown and grey-green are combined with contrasting colors such as
gold, ochre, silver and white. But also pale green, silver-gray and black
brown, with some accents of ochre, orange, gold, silver or white.
Material: leather, fur of artificial fur, but also paper, carton, wood or
raw shiny or mat ceramic. Also weather-beaten concrete and smooth is
possible.
Pattern: smooth, luxury, rough or raw.
Forms: combinations between artificial and natural. Vertical and
horizontal lines alternate and are based on the landscape. Unity in
biotope has priority. Materials can be grouped or limited in the number of
species. Winter 2001: Byzantine
An excess of decoration and color becomes most important. This means
materials with a strong and eye catching pattern. Sources comes from Asian
countries as Turkey and Mongolian. The purpose is to use the own creativity
to create a suitable atmosphere.
Colors: warm colors in monochromatic or totally mixed. Deep blue, ochre,
violet and pink and the use of gold colors.
Material: the best choice are materials with an old look and
weather-beaten. Luxury materials in gold and bronze. Materials are gilded
and decorated with beads, fur, sequin, silk and broidery. Colored and
worked
glass and crystal.
Pattern: broidery, sequin, beads, decorations, riche excessive patterns,
often in a structure of layers or broidery, the use of ribbon, cord and
small mirrors.
Forms: based on forms and ornaments of the East. Ovals and globe forms.
There is an abundance on decoration. there is also the use of riche
materials, fruits onion forms, exotic flowers, combinations of large and
small flowers. Arrangements can have a broidery pattern or a structure of
layers.

Winter 2000: Glow
Glow is a rich atmosphere with colors red and purple in combination with
gold. It gives a feeling of luxury and nostalgia. In general we use many
decorative elements in the flower arrangements.
Colors: warm red till purple tints in combination with green.
Forms: round forms and wreath are perfect of this theme. You can use
different shapes in this trend.
Materials: shiny in contrast with mat and dim. The use of ribbon, wire,
beads, glitters, glass balls. Felt, copper and wax forms give good
combinations in harmony with warm colored roses, berries, Gloriosa and
Hypericum. But also Anthurium and Hydrangea, Protea, Skimmia and peppers.
Around the rose stems you can tape ribbon or decorative plastic. In the hart
of the rose you can put a glass ball or a pearl pin. Also candles are
perfect for this theme. Glue spray can be a base to glue glitter.
Spring 2001: Growing together
This image of spring must give a family feeling. It is an atmosphere
with a childish appearance. The saturated mixed colors are placed in
containers and have an open character. It looks happy and a bit weedy. It
is a trend which needs an own space.
Colors: we see a base and many strong colors. Saturated colors play
together with weak pastel tints. We do not use a lot of green foliage.
Forms: straight and organic forms, often in combination. The whole looks a
bit weedy, but must show rest. The forms bend to each other and cross.
Materials: containers with a strong color, spring flowers, but also
Dendranthema, Gerbera, Ranunculus, Mimosa and Hippeastrum.
Summer 2001: Sensuality
A trend with a aura of brutal unashamed, but in the same time have
a prudish character. Because of this the red till black colors and
saturated colors are important. It is a female trend.
Colors: red, black and warm-green, but also aubergine and purple tints.
Forms: alternating geometric and organic forms. The design must show femininity,
roundness and saturation. Lines must move and not fragile. A mass and a
mass-line form are possible. Curling can stand against straight.
Materials: alternating materials between soft velvet and shining as
paintwork.
Autumn 2001: landscape
Colors: green, gray and brown, often in combination. Also we see
combinations with orange, ochre, yellow, gold and dark-brown.
Forms: natural forms, sometimes in combination with a design vase or
container. Forms are alternated between straight and natural.
Materials: metal vases, strokable containers and natural plaits. Many use of
grasses and spontaneous materials from nature. Material may look
weather-beaten and have a natural form.
Flower arrangements look like on a landscape and show a vegetative
character. Although it often looks like decorative. A change between
straight and natural forms.
Winter 2001: Byzantine
The inspiration find its roots in the Eastern cultures from Turkey till
Mongolia. It is a decorative style in warm colors.
Colors: warm red, orange-yellow, purple, gold and bronze, sometimes in
combination with blue.
Forms: luxury materials, with an eastern atmosphere.
Ornaments and decorative patterns. Glass and crystal and ceramic with
special glaze.
The flower arrangements are overdoing with a basis shape as an onion.
Contrast between weedy and restful forms and colors.
Materials: luxury materials, often decorative. Flowers with a rich
external, fruits.
Trends according EFSA (European Floral Suppliers Association)
The trends for spring and summer 2001 are based on four style groups.
Spring Poem
Color: white with gray, together with pastel tints.
Pattern: natural pattern in stripe and diamond and also in mille fleur.
Materials: rib-, and sand structures. Rough and painted wood,
weather-beaten, and painted metal but also glass and natural textile.
Form: mainly natural county look, but also romantic forms.
Eastern Blooming
Color: neutrals in light and dark, but also light blue and green as an
accent.
Pattern: floral patterns Eastern orientated satin bindings and Jacquard
motives.
Material: natural materials, stones and bark.
Form: elegant and natural forms, Eastern look, but also romantic
natural country shapes.
Fantasy Island
Color: exotic and fresh colors with white as most important one. Orange
and warm-yellow can serve as accent.
Pattern: large plant-, and flower motives, stripe patterns.
Materials: natural materials as bamboo and cane ware. Smooth verities of
wood, often in a nice color, but also shiny metal jute and canvas.
Form: above all geometric forms with a natural look.
Sunny Contrast
Color: white is the basic color, combined with a warm-yellow. Accents via
yellow-green and dark-brown.
Pattern: waffle binding and woven structures. Cane ware and wood grain.
Materials: Paintwork and fine materials, bright smooth and mat ceramic,
reed
and natural materials such as felt, jute and cotton.
Form: geometric forms but also natural forms.
Trends according Nelly Rodi
The Paris style company Rodi expects a change, She sees as coming
trends or movements next directions and she expects that design will have
a come back. Also she expect many contrasts:
Geometric
This is a trend with a young face. It shows us simple forms and geometrical
forms such as circle, square and triangle. The sharp edges of the corners
are gone.
The use of rubber and transparent material. Painted metal, flower patterns
and simple graphical forms.
The colors are mostly pastel-gray in combination with neutral colors and
black.
Plants and flowers: cactus and succulents and old fashion species.
Organics
Nature is the central element, but in a specific contemporary town
interpretation. The modern, symbolic and spiritual becomes more important.
Influences are from the East, but in a modern way translated.
The materials are above all soft, natural look like sorts of wood with the
raw gnarls still in it. Also velvet, silk and satin, but also copper and
albast. There is a use of grasses, plant stems, weed, tropical liane and
so on.
Colors we see in two directions. The warm with cognac, amber, red,
aubergine and more of these. Besides it there are green tints, from the
dark green till the light playful ones.
Remix
This is a direction which on a spontaneous way different trends and
directions combines. Eastern influences, but also kitsch and classical
elements. They play in many ways together.
Materials are mainly paint, patterns with stripes in all kind of patterns.
Colors are mixed, neutral or just colorful.
Entremix
An exclusive trend with a mix of eastern influences.
Materials are precious, luxury and shiny. They are like velvet like or
leather and without doubt very special.
Forms are often graphical, but also full and rich.
Colors are mostly red, black, bordeaux, turquoise, but also silver, white
and gray and of course some green such as the light green with an irised
character. Further on many covered saturated tints.
