Introduction
Information is based on a moderate climate such as in Holland.
There are many beautiful species under the Graminae and suitable for use
in the garden. Characteristic for the many grasses is they grow with a
clump or a turf. They most often have long and small parallel nerves. The
stems often are hollow. To the inflorescens belong the spicated shape.
Grasses will be divided into three families:
- Graminae (or Poaceae); the real grasses
- Cyperaceae; cyper grasses
- Juncaceae; rush and wood rush
Use
In the garden grasses are beautiful in groups or as solitary. Also
bamboo belongs to the grasses. We pay more attention to this plant in
another page, see bamboo.
For use in flower art the elegant stems with the inflorescence are
important. In fresh and in dries form we can use them in all kind of
arrangements and bouquets.
Care
When you harvest grasses, first put them in water including Chrysal for
a few hours. You can use them unlimited in bouquets and in flower
arrangements. Also well known grain such as barley, wheat and rye belong
to the grasses and are very nice in an arrangement. This also for some
water plants such as Papyrus, rush and wood rush.
