Protected plants and animals
Many plants are so rare that they need protection. Most countries have
because of this a list with protected plants and animals. Most countries
also have agreed the Cites-convention. This is of great importance because
otherwise some plants or animals will die out. The Dutch list with
protected plants is made with co-operation of the ministry of agriculture.
The list gives the names of protected species in 1995 (we work on a update).
Besides the national list, each province or city can add some other
species if necessary.
Protected plants are not allowed to dig out, cut of, or to have in possession. Only when a person has a special
license and it concerns plants from
a nursery it is allowed.
To break the law on protected plants and animals can bring you in
prison or gave a heavy penalty. It is important that all who have to do
with flowers know that they cannot just pick or take protected flowers or
plants from nature.
CITES-convention
For international rules and protection of plants and the regulation of
trade in it there is CITES; Convention on International Trade in
Endangered Species of wild Fauna and Flora.
CITES give rules since 1984 to the International trade in endangered
species of plants and animals. For some species you need a special license
in case of trade, or for growing them. About130 countries have signed
the convention of CITES. Many species are protected by the CITES-rules
and you may not possess them. Also many shell species are not allowed to
have. Also coral (these are flower animals) is protected: all
Anthipartaria or thorn coral, Scleractinia or real coral, Coenothecalia
or blue coral and Stolontifera or organ pipe coral. Unfortunately some
traders, growers and florists will not follow the rules of protection.
They will not understand it harms nature if they do so. Cites organisation is very
strict in
the rules.
In general we not take any species of exotically animals or birds as pet
animal. These animals belong in nature.
